NEWS ITEMS FROM THE DIOCESE OF PETERBOROUGH

We're sorry to bear the sad news that Father Collins Okafor, SMMM, has passed away. Father Collins was on his way back from Nigeria to Canada but was too sick to board his flight in Frankfurt, Germany. He was hospitalized there and died shorty afterwards. Father Collins was most recently pastor of St. Alphonsus Parish in Wooler and Holy Angels Parish in Brighton. He had served in the Diocese of Peterborough since 2011 in Courtice, Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls and Mactier.  We will arrange a memorial Mass for Father Collins soon and share details when they are available.  “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.”

WORLD DAY OF THE SICK ON FEBRUARY 11, 2018

February 11 is World Day of the Sick, an observation started by Saint John Paul II as a way for the faithful to offer prayers for those suffering from illnesses. The day coincides with the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes. People around the world take the time to pray for the sick and for those who work very hard to alleviate the sufferings of the sick on this day. Faith organizations mark this day especially to provide the sick with medicines, food, and spiritual guidance. Click Pope Francis' Statement to read more.

WORLD COMMUNICATIONS DAY - Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord

World Communications Day 2017 - Sunday, May 28, 2017 is the 51st WCD celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church worldwide.  The Message of Pope Francis is entitled "Fear not, for I am with you (Isaiah 43:5): Communicating Hope and Trust in our Time". In 2017, World Communications Day will be celebrated on the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. In his Message, the Pope expresses his desire "to contribute to the search for an open and creative style of communication that never seeks to glamourize evil, but instead to concentrate on solutions and to inspire a positive and responsible approach on the part of its recipients."

CELEBRATING THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION IN OUR DIOCESE

Many young people will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on the Solemnity of Pentecost.  Young people in parishes and Catholic schools supported by their families and sponsors have been preparing to receive the sacrament through catechetical instructions and special projects that included apostolic service, reflections on the Mass, learning about the lives of saints and meeting with their pastors.  May God bless these young people as they receive this third sacrament of initiation.

JUNE CAMPAIGN - PRIEST BENEFIT FUND

Give to those who have given a lifetime.

The purpose of the Priest Benefit Fund is to ensure that the retired and sick priests of the diocese receive financial benefits each month to supplement the federal pension and to provide a basic health insurance plan.

The Diocese supports priests in retirement or those on sick leave every month through your generosity.

Your help is needed to support the annual Diocesan Priest Benefit Fund collection during the month of June and to increase donations throughout the year.  We also ask you to consider supporting the Priest Benefit Fund financially through your financial planning and/or the designation of your estate.
